Learning for tomorrow
Dedicated to whole-child education,
seeing our students flourish academically,
physically, spiritually, and socially.
We want our students to develop like Jesus, with a growth mindset – Growing in wisdom (academically), Growing in stature (physically), Growing in favour with God (spiritually), Growing in favour with man (socially). (Luke 2:52)
Island Christian Academy benefits from Generations Christian Education’s 35 years of experience in designing and implementing holistic programmes of learning. At IslandCA, we deliver a broad, creative, developmental and international curriculum, rooted in a clear Biblical philosophy and vision of education. Focus is on the development of the whole child, so that every child will flourish not only academically but also physically, spiritually and socially. Character development and values formation are central to our approach to teaching and learning.
The International Middle Years Curriculum improves the way that 11-14 year olds learn. It is a challenging, engaging, internationally-minded, concept-focused curriculum designed specifically for the unique learning needs of 11-14 year olds in KS3/ lower secondary.
– Develop the qualities and dispositions vital to success in the 21st century: adaptability, cooperation, communication, enquiry, morality, resilience, respect and thoughtfulness.
– Acquire a positive attitude towards learning.
– Acquire the greatest possible understanding and appreciation of themselves and the world around us according to a Biblical worldview.
– Become individuals of character, understanding how to keep healthy – physically, emotionally and spiritually.
– Receive the opportunity and the encouragement to serve others.
– Learn to be responsible global citizens, accepting, respecting and celebrating the diversity among ourselves and the global community.
Students have Chinese Studies classes daily, taught by experienced, specialist Chinese (Putonghua) speaking teachers. There are three ability-levelled pathways. Our programme promotes a love of Chinese language and culture, and enables students to progress towards fluency.
We launched our new Journey 2:52 Christian Education curriculum in 2016-17. Journey 2:52 is derived from our understanding that faith is a process, and though we are all at different places, we are all on a journey; and our shared vision for students—to grow in Christ-likeness as a whole person, is based on Luke 2:52.
Literacy is fundamental to learning, thinking and communicating, and it is embedded in the teaching and learning at IslandCA. Students follow a structured comprehensive language programme based on the UK National Literacy Framework, which focuses on the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and presenting.
The aim of the PE programme is to help our students pursue a healthy and active lifestyle both during and beyond their school years, promoting physical, social, and emotional development. Students engage in a variety of games and activities throughout the year, including athletics, games, and fitness activities in twice-weekly PE classes.
Island Christian Academy believes each child is a unique individual able to learn about God, themselves, others, and their growing world. We are dedicated to providing our students with the support they need to be active and ambitious learners. While every child has individual learning styles and needs, some may need more challenging materials to ignite their advancement while others face challenges physically, socially and/or emotionally and may need extra help in those areas to achieve their best. We are pleased to offer select places for both spectrums of these children.
(Information and Communication Technology)
Students use a range of ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information with responsibility, creativity, and discernment. ICT is an integrated part of learning at IslandCA and has two main components: Common Sense Digital Citizenship and IPC’s ICT programme.
Our students follow a structured maths programme based on the Australian curriculum, which covers essential mathematical skills and knowledge. Our maths programme aims to develop students as confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics who exercise problem-solving and reasoning skills, and make connections between mathematics and other subjects.
Eight personal goals have been selected to focus how students are developed and prepared for life in and beyond school: thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect, enquiry, communication, adaptability, resilience, and morality. These personal goals are taught, modelled and developed in every subject and integrated throughout school life.
We believe that developing a global perspective is essential for our students, and this comprises an important element of their learning experience across subject areas. We seek to develop a student body that is truly international, not only in our diverse backgrounds, but also in heart and outlook as we seek to develop a global people of Christian faith serving others, in accordance with our mission statement.
