The concept of the school, to start a Christian School on Hong Kong Island, has long been in the hearts and minds of many who have gone before us. This school is the fulfilment of many prayers and longings to bless the generations to come.

In January 2011, the Generations Christian Education senior management team began to investigate not-for-profit partners to aid our efforts to the mutual benefit of both parties. After numerous calls to various organisations, the Chinese YMCA agreed to enter into discussions about utilising their vacant school premises.

Generations Christian Education has a rich ministry and education history from the legacy of Youth with a Mission (YWAM HK) Ltd, an international, interdenominational Christian missionary organization. YWAM HK formally started Small World Christian Kindergarten in January 1986 as one of their ministry arms. The first class had eight students and two teachers. The seed for Small World Christian Kindergarten came from an YWAMHK planning day where two teachers asked “How can we make a difference to God’s Kingdom in Hong Kong?”

The Chinese YMCA was established in 1901 and opened its Bridges Street Centre in 1918. Through the Centre, the Chinese YMCA offers group activities, family events and community training programs. They are dedicated to helping children and youth develop self-esteem and grow healthily and happily.

The historic 70 Bridges Street school site dates back to 1912, when it was originally a youth hostel. Today, remnants of the original stone can still be seen in Island Christian Academy’s first aid room near the covered playground on the ground floor. In 1964, the site became a secondary school. In 2002 the Hong Kong Government began using it as a decanting site for a local primary school. The building was then left vacant for more than four years.

We now know that God was at work, just waiting for the perfect time to open a new school! Unbeknownst to either organisation, both Generations Christian Education and the Chinese YMCA had been praying and dreaming about how to start an international school with a partner that shared the same values and vision of leaving God’s legacy for the future. Generations Christian Education manages all the operations of Island Christian Academy and provides all support services and works in collaboration with the Chinese YMCA, the official school sponsor. Together we have shared this journey and are entering our fifth year of classes at Island Christian Academy in 2016-2017.

Island Christian Academy offers primary education for children of approximately 5-11 years of age, through primary years 1-7. We cater to the international community, using the English language as our teaching medium. Our seven storey school building has facilities ranging from dedicated Chinese studies, library, computer technology, science, music/performing arts and visual arts rooms, 18 classrooms, three multi-purpose group rooms, a conference room, 3 covered playgrounds, a dedicated Learning Support Department and School Hall.

School hours are from 8:00am to 2:30pm daily, with provisions for after-school activities in both sports and academic areas.

Vision

So the next generation would know God,
even the children yet to be born, and
they in turn would tell their children.
Then they will put their
trust in God and
will not forget his deeds
but will keep his commands.

(Psalm 78:6-7)
