About Us

The concept of the school has long been in the hearts and minds of many who have gone before us to start a Christian School on Hong Kong Island. This school is the fulfilment of many prayers and longings to touch the generations to come. –

In January 2011, the Generations Christian Education senior management team began to investigate not-for-profit partners to aide our efforts to the mutual benefit of both entities. After numerous calls to various organizations, the Chinese YMCA, agreed to enter into discussions about utilizing their vacant school premises towards our expansion plans.

Generations Christian Education has a rich ministry and education history from the legacy of Youth with a Mission (YWAMHK) Ltd., an international interdenominational Christian missionary organization. YWAMHK formally started Small World Christian Kindergarten in January 1986, as one of their ministry arms. The first class had eight students and two teachers. The seed for Small World Christian Kindergarten came from an YWAMHK planning day where two teachers asked “How can we make a difference to God’s Kingdom in Hong Kong?”

The Chinese YMCA, established in 1901, opened its Bridges Street Centre (the Centre) in 1918. Through the Centre and the adjacent school facility, the Chinese YMCA offers different group activities, family events and community training programs. They are dedicated to helping children and youth develop self-esteem and thus grow healthily and happily.

The historic 70 Bridges Street School site dates back to 1912, when it was originally a Youth Hostel. Today, remnants of the original stone can still be seen in Island Christian Academy’s First Aide Room near the covered playground on the ground floor. In 1964, the site became a secondary school. In 2002 when the Hong Kong Government began using it as a decanting site for a local primary school. The building was then left vacant for more than four (4) years.

We now know that God was at work, just waiting for the perfect time to open a new school! Unbeknownst to either organization, both Generations Christian Education and the Chinese YMCA had been praying and dreaming about how to start an international school with a partner that shared the same values and visions of leaving God’s legacy for the future. Generations Christian Education will provide all the support services and manage all the operations of Island Christian Academy, as we work in partnership with the Chinese YMCA, the official school sponsor. Together we have shared the journey and now we are in our new school!

The 70 Bridges Street site is a seven stores building, which will accommodate more than 400 students once full. Island Christian Academy will offer primary years education for children of approximately 5-10 years of age, through primary years 1-6. We will have a triple stream class offering, or three classes for each year band. We will cater to the international community using an English language teaching medium. Our school has facilities ranging from dedicated Mandarin, library, computer technology, science, music/performing arts and visual arts specialty rooms, 18 classrooms, three multi-purpose group rooms, a conference room, 3 covered playgrounds, a dedicated Learning Support Department and School Hall.

School hours are from 8:00am to 2:30pm daily, with provisions for after-school activities in both sports and academic areas.

So the next generation would know God,
even the children yet to be born, and
they in turn would tell their children.
Then they will put their
trust in God and
will not forget his deeds
but will keep his commands.

(Psalm 78:6-7)
